The Power of Culturally-Adapted Therapy: Why Context Matters

Dr. Rati Khurana1 December 2025

Beyond One-Size-Fits-All

Traditional Western psychological models, while valuable, were developed in specific cultural contexts that may not fully capture the experiences of people from different backgrounds. Culturally-adapted therapy recognises this limitation and seeks to make mental health treatment more relevant and effective.

Why Cultural Context Matters

Our cultural background shapes how we:

  • Express and understand emotions
  • View mental health and illness
  • Relate to family and community
  • Approach help-seeking
  • Find meaning and purpose

Elements of Culturally-Adapted Therapy

Culturally-adapted interventions may include:

  • Language: Using familiar terms and concepts
  • Family involvement: Recognising the role of family in Indian culture
  • Spiritual integration: Incorporating spiritual beliefs as resources for healing
  • Cultural metaphors: Using culturally resonant stories and examples
  • Value alignment: Respecting cultural values in goal-setting

Integrating Eastern Wisdom

In my practice, I integrate principles from Indian philosophy, including concepts from the Bhagavad Gita and Karmayoga. These ancient wisdom traditions offer profound insights into the human condition that can complement modern psychological techniques.

The Research Behind It

Studies consistently show that culturally-adapted interventions are more effective than standard treatments for diverse populations. When therapy feels relevant and respectful of one's background, engagement improves, and outcomes are better.

Remember: Seeking help for mental health concerns doesn't mean abandoning your cultural identity—it means finding a therapeutic approach that honours who you are.
